A week or so ago, on a late afternoon while I was driving, my mind was spinning. Everything that day was going wrong. I had an attitude, I was complaining, and I just felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders.
In the midst of my frustration, I so happened to stop at an intersection. I looked up to see the most beautiful sunset I had seen in a while right in front of me. Instantly the racing of my mind was put to ease. The beauty of what I was seeing caused me to stop for a moment and absorb the breathtaking hues being emitted from the setting sun.
For a moment, everything that was on my mind didn't matter. What mattered to me right then and there was the amazing view before me. For a few seconds, I was in awe. I wanted to capture that moment so I snapped a picture with my phone. Shortly after, the stoplight turned green and I drove off.
As I drove off, I thought about the calmness that engulfed my spirit…I was only looking at a simple sunset. But the thing is, it wasn't just a simple sunset.
As I had taken a deep breath and attempted to get lost in the beauty that was before me, I was reminded of God’s love for me. It was like He was reminding me that everything was going to be okay. God loved me so much that He gave me that moment of peace to calm my spirit. He was reminding me to pay attention.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the cares of life that we often forget to stop and “smell the roses”. God loves us so much that He constantly gives us glimpses of His loving heart in forms of what we sometimes consider “the little things” - A breeze on a hot day, the sunrise greeting us when we awake, the songs of the early birds in the morning, the first bloom of a flower, a laughing baby, a genuine smile from a friend - All of these are beautiful gifts that God gives us to remind us that He loves us. What a loving Father we have!
Writer, David Roper said,
“In the midst of the busyness and stresses of our days, there are patches of beauty all around us, glimpses of God’s goodness that we catch here and there along the way. These are the places in the walls of the universe where heaven is breaking through.”
When I think about these little blessings and gifts God so graciously gives us every day, it makes me want to stop and be more present. I want to chase these beautiful moments that God blesses me to have and spend more of my time living in those loving moments rather than busying myself with the unimportant, frivolous things that I miss out on them.
Life is too short. And as swiftly as the days pass us by, it’s important to take moments to pause and acknowledge the goodness of God’s heart being displayed all around us.
That one peaceful moment that God allowed me to experience on that hectic afternoon left me longing to experience God in that way every day. It gave me a new way to worship and a new way to experience the presence of God’s magnificent love right here in the midst of a chaotic earth.
“God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has placed eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”
